Our Story
Design that begins
with a question
We're a small interior design studio in Kuala Lumpur with a fondness for spaces that feel genuinely inhabited — not staged.

How Solace Dept came to be
Solace Dept began in 2017 as a small consultancy operating out of a shared studio in Bangsar. The founding idea was straightforward: that a well-designed space should reduce the noise of daily life, not add to it. That idea hasn't changed.
Over time the practice grew — slowly and by referral — to include full residential design and project support. We moved to our current studio on Jalan Ampang in 2020 and have worked with clients across the Klang Valley, from terraced houses in Petaling Jaya to condominiums in KLCC and small offices in Bangsar South.
The work tends toward the understated. We're more interested in how morning light falls across a surface than in following whatever aesthetic is circulating on social media this month. We believe good interiors age well precisely because they aren't shaped by trends.
Our Mission
To design spaces that feel like genuine extensions of the people who live in them — thoughtful, specific, and quietly pleasant to spend time in.
What we stand for
- Honesty — about timelines, costs, and what's actually achievable.
- Patience — big decisions deserve time to settle.
- Specificity — every space is different and deserves a considered response.
- Care — we stay involved throughout, not just at the beginning.
Chapter 02
The People Behind the Work
A small team with a long shared interest in spaces that feel considered rather than composed.

Trained in architecture at UTM, Aisha brings a structural sensibility to interior work. She leads every First Chapter Meeting personally and shapes the spatial strategy for each project.
Reza Hakim
Materials & Procurement
Reza has spent a decade building relationships with local craftspeople, fabric suppliers, and furniture makers across the peninsula. He knows where to find the right thing at a fair price.
Lim Tze Wei

Tze Wei produces the 3D visualisations and specification documents that keep contractors aligned and clients confident. His drawings are known for being genuinely readable.
Chapter 03
How We Work
The standards and practices that shape every project, regardless of scale.
Client Confidentiality
We do not share photos, plans, or details of any project without the client's written consent. Your home is yours to share or not.
Transparent Agreements
Every project begins with a written agreement. Scope, fees, revision rounds, and timelines are all set out clearly before work begins.
Considered Material Sourcing
We favour locally produced materials where quality permits, and we ask questions about production practices when sourcing from further afield.
Contractor Oversight
For implementation projects, we conduct regular site visits and document findings. We advocate for quality on your behalf without generating friction unnecessarily.
PDPA Compliance
We handle all personal information in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and store data securely for the duration of each project.
Regular Communication
We update clients at each project milestone and respond to messages within one working day. You should never have to wonder what stage things are at.
Our Practice
Interior design in Kuala Lumpur takes a particular form of local knowledge
Working in KL means designing for a climate, a way of living, and a built environment that doesn't resemble the references most commonly shared on design platforms. Ventilation matters here. Natural light arrives at angles and intensities that change the feel of a room dramatically depending on orientation. Materials behave differently in humidity.
Solace Dept draws on nearly a decade of residential and workspace projects across the Klang Valley. That experience shapes how we think about everything from material finishes and furniture scale to the relationship between indoor and outdoor space in Malaysian homes. We work with suppliers and craftspeople we've come to trust over time, many of them based locally in Selangor and KL.
Our approach suits clients who want to be involved in the process — not necessarily in every decision, but in the direction. We find that the spaces people feel most at home in are the ones that reflect some part of how they actually want to live, rather than a general idea of a well-designed interior.
